Celebrating Unity and Culture Through Art: Kyle Holbrook's MLK Mural Project Presents 10 Inspiring Mural Events in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA -— Kyle Holbrook, a renowned international artist known for his impactful community murals, is thrilled to announce the launch of the MLK Mural Project's 10 Mural Events. This series of transformative mural events will take place from the end of summer until the end of 2023, embodying the essence of Pittsburgh's diverse culture, history, and community spirit.

1) The journey commences on August 21, 2023, with an inaugural mural event at the Clemente Museum (339 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15201), from 1 PM to 8 PM. Attendees will experience a live mural painting session by Kyle Holbrook himself. This event also features signed prints of the monumental 50-ft high “Clemente Museum Mural” by the Kyle Holbrook and Roberto Clemente Jr. This celebration not only honors the legacy of Roberto Clemente but also fosters unity and community engagement during his birthday week. The museum will host an Open House tour to provide attendees with a unique glimpse into the iconic museum's exhibits.

2) Continuing this artistic journey, the African-American Music Institute (7131 Hamilton Ave.) will host an unveiling event on September 2, 2023, from 4 PM to 7 PM. The event will unveil the captivating “Pittsburgh African-American Music Greats Mural Museum”, which pays tribute to legendary figures such as I'm a Jamall, Dakota Stanton, Phyllis Hyman, and more. Complementing the mural, a QR code will provide insightful information about these influential musicians. The mural painted by Kyle Holbrook and Serena English and the event promises a lively ambiance with live music performances and refreshments.

3)The monumental 20th Anniversary of the “Pittsburgh History Mural” event is set to take place on September 6, 2023, at Monroeville Mall (200 Mall Circle Dr., Monroeville, PA 15146), at 11 AM. This event is a tribute to Pittsburgh's storied history, showcasing the talents of Kyle Holbrook as he updates the mural to feature the iconic additions of Mac Miller prior to the 5 -year anniversay of his tragic death and Franco Harris was unfortunately passed away late last year, will be added prior to the Steelers first home game. Both Pittsburgh icons painted on murals previously with Artist Kyle Holbrook. https://www.mtv.com/news/fqu93i/mac-miller-when-i-was-17-bonus-scen Holbrook and Harris spoke about and even texted last year about creating a Mural for the Steeler great. This serves as a heartfelt tribute to both legends, encapsulating the tribute aethetically on the mural.

4) On September 9, 2023, the Rolling Pepperoni mural event unfolds at 6140 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201, from 11 AM to 1 PM. This mural aims to promote environmental awareness and conservation, allowing the public to partake in the painting process. Against the backdrop of Western PA's landscape, this mural emphasizes the importance of preserving the environment, especially after a record-breaking scorching summer.

5)  “National Pepperoni Day”, September 20, 2023, from 11 AM to 1 PM, witnesses the unveiling of the Environmental Mural at Rolling Pepperoni. The event invites the community to celebrate while savoring an array of pepperoni delicacies, creating a fusion of art and culinary delights.

6) On September 21, 2023, in commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of the “Trayvon Martin Mural”, 227 Charles St., Northside, comes alive. Designed by Kyle Holbrook and Kemel Poindexter crafted alongside 15 Northside youths, this mural symbolizes hope, unity, and societal progress, echoing the essence of “International Day of Peace.”

7) “The Hope Court CommUnity Mural” Unveiling on October 10, 2023, from 11 AM to 1 PM at 7901 Dollman St., Pittsburgh, PA 15235, unveils seven murals including a basketball court dedicated to breast cancer awareness and mental health. Painted in collaboration with mental health professionals, patients, and families, these murals stand as a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. A tribute to Kimberly “Hope” Corbin, a Breast Cancer victim and the woman the Hope Center was named after painted by artists Kyle Holbrook, Patrick Everett, Barbados, and Caroline Mead.

8)  “Peace Over Pittsburgh” mural restoration unveiling on October 23, 2023, 11am at  501 N. Homewood Ave., originally painted in 2007 conveys a powerful message against gun violence, fostering peace and unity in Homewood and beyond. The collaborative restoration by Kyle Holbrook and Ernest Bey underscores the community's unwavering commitment to harmony.

9) On Veterans Day, November 11, 2023, a restored “Veterans Memorial Mural” by Lucas Stock and Kyle Holbrook at 2417 East Carson St., Pittsburgh, PA 15203, honors veterans' sacrifices and contributions to society, capturing their spirit within the vibrant art. This 200’ x 30’ mural is a huge landmark on Pittsburgh’s South Side.

10) The series culminates in a virtual masterpiece, the “Draw Me In” Mural, presented in partnership with the Inclusive Schools Network during Inclusive Schools Week from December 5-9, 2023. Designed by Kyle Holbrook, this virtual mural champions diversity and inclusion, transcending language barriers through translation into 13 languages. The Comprehensive mural lesson plan and instructional videos will be available on inclusiveschools.org. The goal is for over 100 countries to paint a mural together to promote inclusive education around the world. Artist Kyle Holbrook will create One mural that combines all of the world murals and will be available on inclusiveschools.org and MLKmural.com.
