“Ajọṣe” Mural

By International Muralist Kyle Holbrook

LAGOS NIGERIA — International muralist Kyle Holbrook has completed a new public mural along Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue in Victoria Island, Lagos. The mural, painted along the busy corridor across from the Civic Centre area, is part of Holbrook’s international Peace Mural Tour.

The work is painted in Holbrook’s signature orange line style. Orange is widely recognized as the color of gun violence awareness and has become a recurring element in the artist’s work promoting peace and nonviolence around the world.

The mural features a symbolic eye surrounded by abstract forms, human figures, peace symbols, and a heart. The imagery represents awareness, compassion, and the shared responsibility communities have in building a more peaceful world.

Holbrook said the mural was inspired in part by the Yoruba concept of Ajọṣe, which means collaboration and working together toward a common goal.

“Ajọṣe is a beautiful idea,” Holbrook said. “It reminds us that peace is not created by one person alone. It happens when communities come together and care for one another.”

Holbrook, who has created murals in 49 U.S. states and more than 40 countries, is currently traveling internationally painting murals that promote unity, community engagement, and nonviolence.

Nigeria, one of Africa’s most culturally influential nations, has a long tradition of creativity, resilience, and community spirit. The new mural along Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue adds a visual reminder in one of Lagos’ busiest districts that art can spark dialogue, reflection, and hope.

The Lagos mural joins a growing series of peace murals Holbrook has painted across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas as part of his ongoing international Peace Mural Tour.

Holbrook hopes the mural will inspire conversations about unity and encourage the spirit of Ajọṣe working together as communities everywhere strive toward a more peaceful future.
