Our newest piece at Dance Alloy

We would like to thank all of the great dancers involved in this project and everyone else who worked so hard to make this newest piece of art happen. Dance Alloy is located in East Liberty and has been helping us out along the way. So, from MLK Community Project to you, thanks!

About the blog

First of all, we at the MLK Community Mural Project would like to thank everyone for visiting this blog so far. It has been a rough couple of weeks as far as getting work done is concerned, but the projects that have come about after all of this are looking great. We are already underway in filming a full length movie entitled “The Art Of Life”, completing 20 murals around the greater Pittsburgh area, and creating a fresher feel for Pittsburgh in general. It takes alot of work to make this happen, so we thank you for your support.

Me & My Shadow

The MLK Community Project is a supporter of all of the arts. In conjunction with Dance Alloy, we had a couple of dancers from the studio come into our offices for a part of another project we will be doing later on this season complete with original music.

Recent developments THIS WEEK!

There were many new developments this week as the mural season continues. Progress is currently underway for this year as we are in the process of working on 20 murals in total for this year. The photos above detail some of the more recent developments in the Bloomfield, Mt. Oliver and Ornsby Park sites. The murals so far are looking great and we will be updating you with the progress as soon as possible.

Recent developments @ the Strip District & the Bloomfield Site

The mural season is underway and there are alot of interesting developments going on at the Bloomfield and Strip District sites for this year. The project involves many creative young minds and a community effort to support public art. As someone who has been blogging this for the past couple of weeks, I’m very excited to be a part of this project. These pictures truly tell the tale of how a well transpired mural comes together, little by litte.

First week update

As the youth artist’s + managers first week comes to a close, it should be noted that all of our sites have positive and enthusiastic reports! Thank you to all of the local businesses, supporters (and yes, that shout-out goes out to all of those who lovingly honk and throw thumbs-up signs to site workers), professional and youth artists, staff, and just about anyone else who has pulled together and made this first week a success.

The first day of the week included fitness for all, and some staff (this youth director included) are still feeling the pain of their quads – days after the sprints and lunges in between classwork and ice breakers.

The remaining two work days under the hot sun included getting to know the wall(s). With primer and chalk lines going up on otherwise empty walls all over the city, the summer 2009 mural kick-off is among us! Some of the sites were even able to draw, outline in paint washes, and fill in significant portions of their designs.

With smiles (or appreciation heard over the phone as nightly check-ins took place) all around; coupled with bonding, and cohesive efforts to collaborate, create and build within beautiful Pittsburgh areas, the first of many hours on the project are right on track.

Keep an eye out for next week updates, including the unveiling of each site’s team name and logo!

Work begins on the Bloomfield mural

One of the main murals on this year’s project has already gone underway. This site will be managed by Danny Devine and Lucas Stock will serve as one of the main artists. The footage that has been compiled will be used for an upcoming video project edited by myself, Temisan Adoki, and will be featured on this blog after the project is completed.
