Cultured Steel Hip Hop Festival and Talib Kweli

Hopefully you got the chance to come out to the first annual Culture Steel Hip Hop Festival in East Liberty, which was held from July 31st to August 1st! This Event featured amazing artists such as Talib Kweli, Rapsody, Jasiri X, and many more.

To give you some background on one of the acts that night, Mr. Talib Kweli, is a hip hop artist born on the streets of Brooklyn New York, New York. He began his career in music in 1995 and from there worked his way into the music industry. Working with some well known vocalists and rappers such as Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Most Def and many more. Kweli was mentioned by Jay Z in his 2003 record of "Moment of Clarity", where Jay said "If skills sold, truth be told/I'd probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli". To which Kweli in his 2004 record "Ghetto Show" Kweli said back "If lyrics sold then truth be told/I'd probably be just as rich and famous as Jay Z." The East Side of Pittsburgh was graced with the presence of this amazing lyricist, along with many other great acts!

Along with all of the action happening inside, outside our MLK staff was representing and painting two amazing mural, thought up by the mastermind Mr. BZE! The mural consisted of microphones, graffiti letters, and a WHOLE lot of skill! There was also a great DJ who played some music which helped make the time fly by before everyone went in to see the performances.

I'll leave some pictures below of the event an also check out some more in our gallery and social media!

Charles Drew Mural Project In Miami!

This beautiful mural was finished on August 13th by our MLK staff and kids in Miami Florida! This mural does an amazing job depicting Mr. Charles Richard Drew, who was an African American General Surgeon. During his lifetime Drew protested the segregation of using African American blood for blood donations. Drew was the first African American surgeon to become an examiner on the American Board of Surgery. Unfortunately, in 1950 Drew passed away in Tuskegee, Alabama where he and three other African American physicians were involved in a car crash. The three other physicians survived, but Drew passed away a few hours after receiving medical care. From this Drew's legacy lives on. "In 1981, the United States Postal Service issued a 35¢ postage stamp in its Great Americans series to honor Drew."

Please enjoy MLK Miami's mural depiction of Mr. Charles Drew!
