Brownsville Middle School Mural

Moving Lives of Kids Teamed up with Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida, Pinnacle, Miami Foundation, and Sherwin Williams to create a fun community mural at Brownsville Middle School in Miami. Dozens of volunteers came out to help create something colorful and beautiful for the school. Remember it's Better in Brownsville!

My name is Rachelle Salnave. I have been living in the South Florida area for the past 3 years with my 2 daughters and dog. I discovered through a posting on Facebook that Brownsville Middle School needed assistance in sprucing up their school.

Located in the heart of Brownsville, an area in Miami, FL and known to many as a historical African-American neighborhood, I really had no idea what to expect, I just wanted to lend a hand.

When I arrived, people from all walks off life were working on a beautiful mural. Meeting Edward, the visionary behind the project, we spoke a bit about our backgrounds, our shared love for Haiti and what art can do to stimulate learning. He asked me if I could shoot some video of the community mural experience on my I-phone.

It was amazing meeting all the wonderful students and community organizers excited to create a bare wall into a work of art. When the kids from the Brownsville Middle School come back from summer vacation, they will be greeted with an artistic mater piece designed with love; a gift for the kids given by the community.

On June 13th, 2014, The MLK Mural Community project created a beautiful mural on the grounds of Brownsville Middle School in Miami, FL. Community leaders, residents, students and community artist's came out from 8am-4pm working together to create a beautiful mural for the kids of Brownsville Middle. The project will be a community mural located at Amberwood Place on W Hawkins Pkwy & McCann rd. The mural includes art from six local and national artists who will lead a group of 10 youth artists. The Amberwood Place Community Mural Project has selected the six professional Artists and 10 local youth artists through a community process and contest. The three-week project will pair local aspiring artists with professional artists to create a 100-foot long community mural to be located at Amberwood Place. The images express the history, culture, and future of Longview Texas.

The winners of the six professional artist positions were announced on December 12 2013 at the Longview Museum of Fine Arts in the Art Works Education Room located on Tyler Street in Downtown Longview. Youth Artists submitted drawings and were selected by a panel of community members that judged the youth’s artwork, and the winners were announced earlier this year. Each of the 10 youth artists will receive a stipend for their contribution to the project.

Moving Lives of Kids Art Center and Miami Children’s Initiative

MCI KABOOM PLAYGROUND – Liberty City

5905 NW 19th Ave. Miami FL 33142

Miami, FL March 17, 2014 – Moving the Lives of Kids Art Center (MLK Mural), is pleased to announce the kickoff of a new mural in Liberty City on Wednesday March 19th - Friday, March 21st  from 9AM-4PM, at MCI KABOOM PLAYGROUND – Liberty City, 5905 NW 19th Ave. Miami FL 33142. Moving Lives of Kids is creating the mural in partnership with Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI). Come join in the festivities and help make a positive mark on Liberty City’s future.

The mural will be created at the MCI Kaboom Playground and Community Space. The theme reflects the core values represented at MCI and MLK: community, healthy children and families, and life skills. The mural will decorate a community garden, community space, and playground. Volunteers from the community are encouraged to participate. The event will be free, fun, and open to the public.

Miami Children’s Initiative is a place-based cradle to career initiative that facilitates and catalyzes effective, sustainable transformation in one of our community’s most challenging and promising neighborhoods - Liberty City. Utilizing the successful framework of the Harlem Children’s Zone, we define a 29 block Impact Zone (IZ) in which we work. There we target neighborhoods and residents with a 2-pronged approach: 1) laser-focus on supporting/nurturing every child and their family and 2) creating continuous visual signs of positive change in the immediate surroundings. We coordinate with service providers and residents to provide wrap-around and holistic services to children residing on MCI’s blocks.

MLK Mural artists will work over the three days with local families, students, and residence to create the mural. Youth will received community service learning hours for their work as well as hands-on training and education on public art processes. MLK Mural is dedicated to the healing and inspiring power of creating public art in partnership with the local youth and support of communities. The youth have a unique opportunity to work with experienced artists from MLK Mural and the chance to create pieces of public art that will beautify Liberty City for years to come.

Join MLK Mural and MCI in celebrating this new addition to public art in Liberty City. Moving the Lives of Kids Community Mural Project (MLK Mural) is a 501 © (3) charitable organization, which focuses on the arts, youth development, and education. Find out more at www.mlkmural.com
