Moving Lives of Kids Art Center and Miami Children’s Initiative

Miami, FL March 17, 2014 – Moving the Lives of Kids Art Center (MLK Mural), is pleased to announce the kickoff of a new mural in Liberty City on Wednesday March 19th - Friday, March 21st from 9AM-4PM, at MCI KABOOM PLAYGROUND – Liberty City, 5905 NW 19th Ave. Miami FL 33142. Moving Lives of Kids is creating the mural in partnership with Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI). Come join in the festivities and help make a positive mark on Liberty City’s future.

The mural will be created at the MCI Kaboom Playground and Community Space. The theme reflects the core values represented at MCI and MLK: community, healthy children and families, and life skills. The mural will decorate a community garden, community space, and playground. Volunteers from the community are encouraged to participate. The event will be free, fun, and open to the public.

Miami Children’s Initiative is a place-based cradle to career initiative that facilitates and catalyzes effective, sustainable transformation in one of our community’s most challenging and promising neighborhoods - Liberty City. Utilizing the successful framework of the Harlem Children’s Zone, we define a 29 block Impact Zone (IZ) in which we work. There we target neighborhoods and residents with a 2-pronged approach: 1) laser-focus on supporting/nurturing every child and their family and 2) creating continuous visual signs of positive change in the immediate surroundings. We coordinate with service providers and residents to provide wrap-around and holistic services to children residing on MCI’s blocks.

MLK Mural artists will work over the three days with local families, students, and residence to create the mural. Youth will received community service learning hours for their work as well as hands-on training and education on public art processes. MLK Mural is dedicated to the healing and inspiring power of creating public art in partnership with the local youth and support of communities. The youth have a unique opportunity to work with experienced artists from MLK Mural and the chance to create pieces of public art that will beautify Liberty City for years to come.
